I won't say that I don't recommend this one. It's not bad but could have been better. It is horror but not all guts and brains and screaming. If that's what you're looking for you ought to pass this one up, likewise if you're at all squeamish.Good acting, even the character development was spot on. The plot was ok at first. But, as I explain below, if you care or bored enough to read that, that is where I start getting my panties in a bunch.Just like disappointing sex, a good beginning and middle whith a floppy unsatisfying ending. Were we supposed to believe that the main character was so crazy that the ending just can't make since? Because, IMO, that's a lazy cop out. Not to mention, it's also a waste of a perfectly, sturdy, good beginning and middle of a movie. What's the rush anyway? Leave out some slow boring parts and replace it with a few details that make it come out with a satisfying ending and it's good to go.Hell, done right, it could have been pumped up full of sequel potential. I'm almost convinced that writers have forgotten how to end a movie properly. 9 put of 10 times the end is lame or an imaginative cliff hanger that leaves you guessing and not in a good way. No, a good way is when the imagination can actually enjoy pondering all the possibilities long after the movie is over. And if it's a mediocre cliff hanger, well, it's still usually worth a little pondering the potential scenarios afterwards.I don't know if it's me being more picky or if it's a true development. But, over the last 10 years or so, especially the last few years, all to often movie endings are slacking. That is putting it nicely. And when they have no real ending they expect us the viewer to imagine it, to think a out it. The problem with that is they fail to supply what's needed for that to happen. I'm not alone in the belief that even the wildest out of this world story has to make enough since to be relatable, and relatable enough to spark the imagination especially when the ending is a cliff hanger. Anyway, you get my point or not. It's all good there are worse problems in the world.Still, I don't want to be rude. I wanted to like this one. But damn, movie after movie has these unsatisfying, anticlimatic endings and it's getting really annoying. In the end, for this one 4 star beginning, 3.5 middle and for the end it's a new rating called level lazy ending.WARNING: SPOILERS. DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T LIKE SPOILERS.SECOND WARNING: A DOG IS KILLED IN THIS MOVIE - DELIBERATELY KILLED BY ONE OF THE CHARACTERS. IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO THAT, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE.I wish someone had warned me about that. I would not have watched it if I'd known. It happens about 20 minutes before the end, so I kept watching to see what happened. But I would have avoided it altogether if I had known about the dog. Not only that, the Britt Robertson character is pregnant, looks at least seven or eight months along, and the baby dies in utero. NOTE TO FIRST-TIME DIRECTORS: YOU DON'T MESS WITH CHILDREN AND ANIMALS. YOU JUST DON'T. YOU WILL LOSE VIEWERS - AND FANS - IF YOU DO.I really wanted to like this movie. Thomas Dekker directed it. Britt Robertson is in it. Natasha Lyonne is in it. All of them are favorites of mine. If the story had stuck with the accident and ***SPOILER*** the twin storyline it would have been good. Why did they need to drag in physical and sexual abuse as well? The fact that Jack could not accept his mother's death as well as his father's makes sense when the viewer finds out that his father tried to drown Jack but mistakenly drowned his twin Andy instead, and his mother, while she didn't actually try to stop it, at least the way she tells it, she didn't want it to happen. She knew it was Andy and she let him die and let Jack live. So even though Jack thought he was close to his father, his father was obviously mentally ill and not only wanted to kill Jack when he was a baby, he actually did - or so he thought. Jack remembers his mother slapping his father around. I'm sure guilt kept his father from fighting back. The problems with this movie are mainly with the writing. Rory Culkin does a good job with the material he has to work with. Britt Robertson is only on screen for two to three minutes - literally on screen, Skyping with Culkin. Natasha Lyonne has a bit part as a vet tech. The movie is all Culkin. In retrospect, as a viewer you have to wonder how many, if any, of the other characters are even real - but I don't think that was intentional on the part of the writer. The mother, yes. The neighbor, maybe. But is the fiancee real? The baby? You only see them on a computer screen. And obviously if the mother died in the accident, Culkin's character killed the dog. Or did he? The ending leaves it all pretty much up in the air.Final thoughts: Don't waste your time on this movie. It isn't worth it. I should have paid attention to the 5.0 IMDb rating. But because three of my favorite actors were involved, I ignored it. Won't do that again.Okay so there is no question that whomever watches this will have either loved it or hated it, I'm not sure there is an inbetween. Yes this movie is a head scratcher at some points however the most part I took things in my own way. I think the writer-director certainly was going through his own demons while making this movie for sure. I have to say I kept trying to guess or figure out what was happening and was astounded at every twist and turn. The main actor (bravo Rory) truly was amazing and he was going through major PAST trauma as well as his present trauma all at once. I think the death of his father took him down a rabbit hole of emotions and finally brought up the horrendous things that happened to him as a baby and then as a small toddler. With the passing of his father that brought to the surface things his brain wouldn't let him remember. I think the ending left a lot of questions yes it answered a lot but I have so many more. However I found the acting incredible and the storyline tragic yet amazing in all honesty. This is a dark psychological thriller rather than a horror film. It was great and I find movies like this few and far between. This is a gem and I am glad I found it. I don't want to spoil it for you so I'm sure after you watch it you'll understand. I watched it free thank you Prime but I will say I wouldn't hAve been too upset if I bought it either. WARNING- If you can't handle the topic of child abuse and mental health issues you shouldn't watch. For everyone else I think you'll love it immensely or downright despise it. I loved it. I recommend this very much.Great product and movieDelivered with care and fast tooThank you!Not too bad.
