I’ve heard Judy Fjell several times in person and have many of her CDs. Her voice, insight, and wit are touchstones of energy and sanity for me. One of her songs, “Livin’ on Dreams” from the CD of the same name, has held me in good stead over the years. Now Judy comes along with a solo guitar. This is a compilation for living on dreams. Her phrasing and arrangements open up space for dreaming and living. A guitar in the hands of a singer is an apt description of her playing. A play on the title of one of her pieces, “A Life Well Lived”, is to say here is a guitar well played. This and the following song ,“Spirit of Life”, are pulling me back for another listen. A question they are posing for me: “Is this reflective of your life?” I hope so. Though very different from Judy’s excellent song writing and vocal work, this reflective music works well to provide a settled and confident view that has come through much. As such title of the CD is appropriately the last and assured line of “Poor Wayfarin’ Stranger”. Judy’s “Pure Joy” guitar opens a big sky perspective similar to St. Julian of Norwich, that no matter what has come, “All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.” I invite you to listen and see what dreams it sparks in you.
