I am a writer who does character-driven plots and I think I can see why this gets 50% bad reviews. People are too fresh off of the Marvel movie scenes, where the story is stupid and the bad guys so bad it doesn't even make logical sense, or the woke movie scene, where all the female characters are superior and Mary Sues with no flaws, and the men are idiot cuckolds. Why it is such a thing now for the story to be ABC 123, simple and stupid, is beyond me.This is a movie for people with educations and patience, a movie where the characters, while not always likeable, drive the plot. Like with magical realism, not every detail has an explanation, because, um, what does in real life?Dear America: Not all characters have to be likeable. Kate, for example, is supposed to be hated. Her lover is supposed to be ambiguous at first, then tragic in the end. The married couple have a clear character arc, and I grew to like them as the movie went on. I like that they were a mixed-race couple. That is also likely why 50% of the US hated it. They are racist as well as stupid.I do think this movie worked much better in flashbacks, and maybe that too threw off the dunces in the crowd. Or maybe it was the lack of explanation for the ghost? I still find this surprising, because most humans like a good mystery. I guess in the US now, we need it all explained out, and tied up at the end, because life is so perfect, right? In this age where women models "perform" other people's music, instead of the old days where they wrote and played their own compositions as true artists, I guess so many viewers need their hand held, and to not be offended either. This movie does not lip sync, or do shaky-butt dances. It just is, and it IS good.So recap: killer movie. Wish there were more like it.
