The allmusic website labels Lapsley as similar to Adele which is really wide off the mark. Any new young British solo female act nowadays seems to get painted with the "similar to Adele" brush, but Lapsley sounds nothing like her. I would put her style a lot closer to Lorde, with a singing voice more like a non-shouting version of Florence & the Machine. I'm ranking this as five stars even if not all of the songwriting is stellar - although it's always good and often excellent. It's a testament to the importance of sympathetic arrangements and strong production which this album has in spades. Every song stands on its own.Although the music is largely electronic, like Lorde this is mostly not dance pop - with the exception of "Operator" which sounds quite a bit like Sade. This is yet another very impressive debut from a young (19) female musician that will be interesting to follow as she continues to mature.What will be far more helpful than any review in determining whether this is for you is to watch the "Falling Short" video on YouTube. If you love that, you should get this whole album. If not, then this isn't for you.
