Description
Product Description Gary grew up in a small mill town in New England, demonstrating early on the eclectic mix of musical tastes and talents reflected in his work today. By 13, he had taught himself piano, guitar, drums and accordion. He wrote and copyrighted his first song, Move Away, at the age of 15. His high school rock band won a number of 'battle of the bands' competitions which led to recording contracts. In 1979, he released one of the first indie albums, titled Just a Word. The album, with lyrics, music and vocals by Gary, features performances by Dan Cowan, Dave Wayne, Todd McCoy, Joe Getgen and Skip Thomas. In August 2004, Just a Word was digitally remastered and released as a 25th anniversary edition. Patrick MacDonald, Seattle Times music critic, summed it up: Exceptional piano work!' During the 1980s and '90s, Gary continued to write music and teach piano while exploring new computer applications for his work in musical performance and recording. In 1987, he created TalkTools, one of the first desktop speech applications for a personal computer. In 2001, he founded and continues to sponsor BreakThrough Digest, an award-winning health web site. In 2004 he released two CDs of instrumental music; Take Home Music and All of Us. Gary founded OnlyPiano.com and Only Piano Radio in November of 2004. Already receiving thousands of visitors each month, the web site hosts exclusive interviews with new and seasoned pianists, such as David Lanz and Bob Alberti, along with extensive resources about every aspect of the piano. Only Piano Radio broadcasts jazz, classical, blues and new-age piano music 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Gary's new release, Imaginary Piano, a high-energy collection of jazz motifs in classical dress, is available on the web now and will be in stores in May of 2005. Gary's influences include Thelonious Monk, Vangelis, Bill Evans, the Beatles, and John Williams: his music has been compared to David Lanz, Michael Kamen and Dave Brubeck. He is a member of American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS). About the Artist Born in Connecticut, Gary Paul's interest in music began at an early age. By thirteen, Gary Paul had developed skills in piano, guitar, drums and accordion. He wrote and copyrighted his first song Move Away'at the age of fifteen. By the mid eighties, Gary Paul had a catalog of more than three hundred compositions. His solo album "Just a Word" was independently released in August of that year and a six-month solo tour followed. 'Eyes Like Yours' a cut from that album went to number 3 at WBZ in Boston, and received considerable airplay and press throughout the country. During the eighties, Gary Paul continued to write and perform locally as the 'Paul Brothers' which included regional bookings with his friend and cohort David Wayne, while raising his son in the Pacific Northwest. During the nineties, Gary Paul discovered a synergy between music and computer technology and decided to take advantage of the freedom it provided. While producing music for radio commercials, radio plays and other electronic venues, Gary focused on developing innovative contemporary electronic orchestrations.
