Alex Attias, here under his solo Mustang guise, pours the funk on thick with BACK HOME. "Help Me" lays it on heavy, while "Closer to Me" has a thrumming bass that rolls like an earthquake. "Confusion" thumps like a herd of elephants, and "Angels" has an electro feel that's grounded by the vocal chants and strings. There's a certain African propulsiveness to the percussion (also evident on Attias' Beatless project) that's undeniable. "Back Home" and "10,000 Leagues Deeper" sound a little too similar to be next to each other on the album, but Bembe Segue's urgent vocals help to distinguish them. And the heaviness of "Darker Side of Light" is leavened by the brightness of "Everchanging Times" and "Transformation." And, finally, "Finding Who We Are," takes the album out on a chill note, while still maintaining that Afro-vibe throughout. A strong album.
